The Birthday People (By Hernping Ang) eBook
The Birthday People.
This short 116-page book is for anyone who has ever dreaded their birthday, felt strangely low as the day approached, or wondered why one date on the calendar could carry so much weight.
It explores the quieter pain that birthdays can bring: being forgotten, feeling unseen, comparing your life with where you thought you would be, grieving the people who are no longer here, feeling ashamed of wanting to be celebrated, or realising that a full room can still feel lonely.
More than anything, it is a book for people who have told themselves, “It is just another day,” while knowing that some part of them still hoped to be remembered.
From the author
I wrote this book from both my own lived experience and my work as a psychologist and therapist.
For many years, I did not fully understand why birthdays affected me so deeply. I thought I simply disliked attention, surprises, songs, or being made the centre of a room. Over time, I began to realise that birthdays can touch much older stories: conditional love, loneliness, grief, shame, abandonment, survival, and the private wish to feel known without having to ask.
This is not a book about forcing yourself to enjoy birthdays. It is also not a guide to planning the perfect celebration.
It is a series of reflective essays and deeply human stories about what birthdays can reveal. Some chapters explore the pain of being forgotten. Others look at birthdays after loss, the pressure of age and milestones, the shame of being celebrated, the difference between receiving a cake and actually feeling seen, and the quiet countdown some people carry towards a day they wish would simply pass.
My hope is that this book helps you understand what your birthday may be touching, and gives you language for feelings that can otherwise seem childish, unreasonable, or difficult to explain.
You do not have to make the day happy.
You do not have to pretend it means nothing.
Perhaps you can begin by meeting it with a little more honesty and a little less shame.
Thank you for supporting this book. Every purchase helps support the wider work I do through Kaya Toast for the Soul and the mental health social enterprise I run.
Your support allows me to continue creating accessible mental health resources, writing, and projects that help emotional pain feel less lonely and easier to understand.
This is for the birthday people.
The ones who wanted the day to pass quietly.
The ones who hoped someone would remember.
And the ones who are still learning that wanting to feel known was never something to be ashamed of.
